Gauhati High Court to Hear Shyamkanu Mahanta Bail Plea in Zubeen Garg Death Case

Guwahati, May 25: The Gauhati High Court is scheduled to hear the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta on May 25 in connection with the widely discussed Zubeen Garg death case, with the proceedings entering their third round and expected to have a significant impact on Mahanta’s immediate legal position.

The case has drawn widespread attention across Assam over recent weeks, with both the defence and prosecution presenting detailed submissions before the court. Earlier hearings took place on May 15 and May 22 in the courtroom of Justice Mitali Thakuria.

During the previous hearing, Mahanta’s legal team submitted additional documents and advanced arguments supporting the bail application. Senior advocate Pran Bora, appearing on behalf of Mahanta, argued that the death of Zubeen Garg resulted from an unfortunate accident rather than an intentional act.

The defence further maintained that Mahanta should not be held criminally responsible for the incident and referred to statements recorded before the Special Investigation Team, which it claimed supported his plea of innocence. The legal team also cited earlier court rulings in comparable cases while seeking bail.

The hearing on Monday is expected to focus on the state’s submissions. The prosecution is likely to oppose the bail application and seek its rejection before the court. Devajit Lon Saikia is also expected to appear with the state’s legal team, highlighting the importance attached to the matter.

With both sides preparing for final arguments, the proceedings are being closely followed, as the outcome could influence the next stage of the high-profile case.
