Itanagar, May 25: A complaint has been submitted before the National Human Rights Commission alleging custodial torture of Arunachal Pradesh-based anti-drug activist Gumin Mize at Bihpuria Police Station in Assam’s Lakhimpur district.
The complaint was filed by Buteng Tayeng, who alleged that police personnel subjected Mize to physical assault, verbal abuse and denied him a proper medical examination while he was in custody.
The petition has urged the human rights body to conduct an independent investigation into the allegations and take action against those found responsible.
According to the complaint, Mize allegedly sustained serious injuries during his detention. Photographs that reportedly showed bruises on his body and circulated on social media triggered widespread reactions and concern across Arunachal Pradesh.
Several civil society organisations, student bodies and anti-drug groups have condemned the alleged incident and demanded accountability. Activists have also called for immediate intervention by human rights authorities and transparent monitoring of any investigation into the matter.
Mize, known for his anti-drug campaigns and awareness activities in Arunachal Pradesh, has reportedly received support from multiple organisations and local residents following the allegations.
The incident has renewed concerns over custodial violence and human rights protection in the region, with supporters urging authorities in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to ensure an impartial and fair inquiry.
Police authorities concerned have not yet issued any official statement regarding the allegations. The matter is expected to draw broader attention as the NHRC examines the complaint.
