Suspected Marikolong Robbery Mastermind Killed in Police Gunfight in Assam’s Nagaon

Nagaon, May 26: A suspected robber wanted in connection with the Marikolong robbery case was allegedly killed during an exchange of fire with police in Assam’s Nagaon district in the early hours of May 26, officials said.

According to Nagaon Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das, police had received specific intelligence regarding the movement of a group of suspected criminals who were allegedly planning to carry out another robbery in the district.

Based on the information, a team from Nagaon Police launched an operation at Borkandali-Mikirpar village under the Rangaloo patrol post area. During the operation, police personnel reportedly came across five suspected robbers.

Officials stated that the suspects attempted to escape after noticing the police team. During the chase, one of the individuals allegedly opened fire at the police personnel, prompting retaliatory firing by the police in what authorities described as an act of self-defence.

The injured suspect was immediately shifted to Nagaon Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead by doctors.

The deceased was identified as Khairul Ali, also known as Moni, a resident of Thana Road in North Lakhimpur town.

Police claimed Khairul Ali was one of the prime accused and the alleged mastermind in the Marikolong robbery case that took place last month. According to officials, the incident had left a doctor seriously injured, while her wife later succumbed.

Investigators also said the accused had allegedly been involved in several robbery cases across Nagaon and Lakhimpur districts and had remained under police surveillance for a prolonged period.

During the operation, police recovered a 7.65 mm pistol along with two empty cartridges from the site.

Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
