MS Dhoni Yet to Decide IPL Future: Kasi Viswanathan

Chennai: Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan has said that the franchise has not yet held discussions with former captain MS Dhoni regarding his future in the Indian Premier League. Dhoni, who reportedly missed the entire IPL 2026 season due to injury concerns, remained on the sidelines even as Chennai struggled for consistency during the tournament. The five-time IPL-winning captain was initially believed to be preparing for his final season in the league, but his absence has now sparked speculation that he could return for IPL 2027.

Speaking to media, Kasi said Dhoni has always made such decisions independently and the franchise respects his approach. He added that CSK would like Dhoni to remain associated with the team in any capacity, whether as a player, mentor or coach. According to reports, Dhoni was recovering from a calf injury that worsened during rehabilitation, while a thumb problem further delayed his return to full fitness. His absence was felt heavily in CSK’s middle order as the franchise failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad returned as captain this season after injury concerns last year forced him to hand over leadership duties to Dhoni midway through the campaign. Despite a disappointing season, Kasi expressed confidence in Gaikwad’s leadership abilities and credited both Dhoni and head coach Stephen Fleming for shaping him into a calm and composed captain.
