IPL Bans Smart Glasses in Restricted Zones

Mumbai: The IPL’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has issued a fresh advisory to players and support staff, warning them against carrying or using smart glasses and AI-enabled eyewear inside restricted zones during matches. According to reports, the advisory was circulated after concerns were raised over the increasing availability of smart eyewear devices capable of recording audio and video, live-streaming content and enabling communication through Wi-Fi or mobile networks. The ACSU fears that such devices could pose serious risks to the integrity and security of the tournament.  Under the IPL’s Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) rules, these gadgets have now been categorised as “Audio/Video Recording Devices” and “Communication Devices.” Players and team officials have been instructed to deposit smart glasses, AI-enabled sunglasses and similar wearable devices with Security Liaison Officers before entering restricted areas on match days.

The regulations specifically prohibit devices equipped with hidden cameras, voice assistants, augmented reality displays or real-time information systems that could potentially influence decision-making or allow covert communication. The new restrictions apply to all IPL venues and team areas. The latest directive comes amid stricter anti-corruption measures introduced by the BCCI during IPL 2026 following concerns over unauthorised access to players, dugout protocol breaches and security risks around team hotels.

Officials have warned that failure to comply with the guidelines could lead to disciplinary action and penalties under IPL operational regulations. The ACSU has also intensified monitoring around dressing rooms, hotels, practice venues and hospitality areas to prevent any possible integrity breaches during the tournament.
