Goalpara, May 30: A pregnant wild elephant died after being electrocuted in the Mornoi area of Assam’s Goalpara district after reportedly coming into contact with a live electric wire while entering a village in search of food.
According to reports, the lone elephant strayed into the village from a nearby forest on Wednesday night. While moving through the locality, it accidentally touched an electric wire and died on the spot due to electrocution.
Forest Department personnel reached the site during the night and recovered the carcass. A preliminary inquiry was conducted on Thursday morning, followed by a post-mortem examination, which confirmed that the elephant was pregnant.
Officials subsequently buried the elephant along with its unborn calf in accordance with wildlife protocols.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenge of human-elephant conflict in Assam, where wild elephants frequently enter human settlements in search of food. Forest authorities are continuing their investigation and are expected to examine the source and condition of the electric line involved in the incident.
