Guwahati: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has released significant updates on the ongoing investigation into the death of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, with CID Additional Director General of Police (SDGP) Munna Prasad Gupta addressing key developments during a press briefing on Saturday.
Gupta clarified that Indian authorities cannot conduct investigations independently in foreign jurisdictions, emphasizing that any overseas inquiry must proceed under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) framework.
“All necessary information has been officially sent to the Attorney General’s Office in Singapore,” Gupta stated, adding that communication is ongoing with the Indian High Commission in Singapore. “The CID cannot operate in Singapore without local cooperation. Our request was routed through the Ministry of Home Affairs and has reached the appropriate legal authority there,” he added.
The Singapore government has reportedly barred on-site investigations by Indian officials, though coordination and data exchange are being facilitated through diplomatic channels.
On the forensic front, Gupta confirmed that the viscera report has been received and forwarded to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for expert analysis. A specialized medical committee has been formed to cross-verify the viscera findings with the postmortem report.
“The expert committee will prepare a consolidated report once both analyses are reconciled. The final report is expected to be handed over to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma within the next two days,” Gupta said.
A portion of the report will also be shared with select journalists and political representatives to ensure transparency in the investigation.
The CID official further disclosed that a notice has been issued to Assamese expatriates connected to the case. “One individual has already appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT), while the names of 11 expatriates have been recorded so far,” he revealed, warning that legal action will be taken against those who fail to cooperate.
Gupta also confirmed that two of Zubeen Garg’s personal staff members have been arrested and remain under interrogation. Their custody is being maintained in accordance with legal procedures, with a maximum remand period of 14 days.
Reiterating the department’s commitment, Gupta affirmed that the CID is conducting a fair, transparent, and thorough probe, examining all possible domestic and international angles to ensure justice in the case.
