Sikkim High Court Admits PIL Against Odd-Even Vehicle Policy, Seeks Public Feedback

Gangtok, May 30: The High Court of Sikkim on May 30 admitted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the statewide odd-even vehicular movement regulation imposed by the state government.

The PIL was filed by Mahesh Rai, spokesperson of the Citizen Action Party-Sikkim, who questioned the impact of the restrictions on the general public.

Hearing the matter, a division bench of the High Court directed all District Collectors across the state to issue public notices within three days and collect grievances and concerns from citizens affected by the odd-even vehicle movement rule. The district administrations have been instructed to submit their findings before the court.

The court also directed the state government to furnish details of the public transportation arrangements and measures introduced to facilitate movement for residents during the enforcement of the restrictions.

The odd-even regulation was introduced by the government as part of its traffic and mobility management strategy. However, the policy has faced criticism from various sections of the public, with concerns being raised over inconvenience and accessibility.

The matter is scheduled for further hearing on June 9, when the court will review the reports submitted by the District Collectors and the state government.
