Conrad Sangma Appeals for Immediate Release of Civilians Held Hostage in Manipur

Shillong, June 1: National People’s Party (NPP) President Conrad K. Sangma has made a humanitarian appeal for the immediate and unconditional release of civilians reportedly being held hostage in Manipur amid the state’s continuing ethnic tensions.

In separate letters addressed to the leaders of Kuki Inpi Manipur and the United Naga Council, Sangma expressed grave concern over reports that six Naga men and fourteen Kuki civilians have remained in captivity since May 13 and 14, 2026.

Highlighting the human cost of the incident, Sangma said the continued detention of civilians has caused immense distress to families and communities. He noted that mothers, children and elderly family members have been left living in fear and uncertainty while awaiting the safe return of their loved ones. According to him, such incidents only deepen divisions among communities that have lived together for generations.

Making an appeal on humanitarian grounds, the NPP leader called for the immediate release of all hostages irrespective of differences and urged that their safety and well-being be ensured. He also appealed for those being held to have access to medical care, food and communication with their families until they are reunited with their loved ones.

Sangma stressed that the challenges confronting Manipur cannot be resolved through violence or abduction, but only through dialogue and mutual understanding. He said the younger generation across all communities deserves a future marked by peace, education and opportunity rather than prolonged conflict.

Reaffirming the NPP’s commitment to peace, unity and human dignity, Sangma assured support for a safe, transparent and dignified release process. He also urged all stakeholders to embrace compassion, reconciliation and constructive engagement in the larger interest of securing lasting peace in Manipur.
