Imphal, June 1: The Manipur government has assured the United Naga Council (UNC) that intensive efforts are underway to trace six missing persons and address security concerns in the state, while also appealing to the organisation to facilitate the safe release of people and ensure that any form of economic blockade is lifted in the larger public interest.
In an official communication issued on Saturday, the Home Department responded to concerns raised by the UNC regarding the disappearance of six individuals and the prevailing security situation in parts of the state. The reply was sent by N. Ashok Kumar, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home), to UNC president Ng. Lorho.
The government stated that ensuring the safety and security of all citizens remains its highest priority and informed the council that security agencies have intensified efforts to locate the missing persons. According to the communication, sustained Cordon and Search Operations (CASO), combing operations, area domination exercises and intelligence-based actions are being carried out across affected areas as part of the search efforts.
The state government further informed the UNC that the case related to the missing individuals has been transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to ensure an independent, transparent and expeditious investigation.
Addressing concerns surrounding the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement and designated camps of armed groups, the government stated that the agreed ground rules would continue to be enforced strictly. It also noted that the rationalisation and relocation of designated camps would be undertaken in coordination with the Central government.
The communication emphasised that the NIA probe would identify all those involved in the abduction of civilians and that stringent legal action would be taken against anyone found responsible, irrespective of affiliation or status. It added that security forces and investigating agencies are continuing their efforts to identify and apprehend those behind the incidents.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and communal harmony, the government said it remains focused on safeguarding citizens and strengthening security arrangements in vulnerable areas across the state.
The letter concluded with an appeal to the UNC to assist in securing the safe release of people and to ensure that any form of economic blockade is withdrawn in the interest of the public. The communication comes amid growing concern over the disappearance of six persons and the security situation in several parts of Manipur.
