Assam Cab and Driver Associations Announce June 10 Protest Over Fare Revision and Income Decline

The Assam State Drivers’ Association and the All Guwahati Cab Drivers’ Association have announced a protest programme on June 10, demanding revision of fare structures and redressal of issues affecting the livelihood of drivers across the state.

As part of the planned agitation, members of both organisations will stage a demonstration in front of the office of the Transport Commissioner. The associations said the protest follows repeated representations to the government and relevant authorities, which they claim have not resulted in any concrete action.

The drivers’ bodies stated that memorandums outlining their demands have been submitted multiple times to the Transport Department and district administrations. However, they alleged that no effective response or corrective measures have been implemented so far.

A key concern raised by the associations is the widening gap between operating costs and earnings. They pointed to rising fuel prices, particularly petrol and diesel, while alleging that fare rates in the online cab sector have declined over the years.

According to their estimates, average earnings per kilometre, which stood at around ₹25 in previous years, have dropped to nearly ₹8 in the 2025–26 period. They said this decline, combined with increasing maintenance costs, has placed significant financial strain on drivers and their families.

The associations further stated that hundreds of cab drivers from different parts of Assam are expected to participate in the protest, urging the government to intervene and implement a revised fare structure to ensure sustainable income and improved working conditions for those in the sector.
