Tension prevailed in the Herapati-Tanpara area of Assam’s Nagaon district after local residents staged a protest against the alleged spread of drug abuse and vandalised the residence of a suspected drug peddler, accusing police of inaction despite repeated complaints.
According to local sources, a large group of residents assembled to protest against the reported sale and consumption of banned narcotic substances in the locality. The demonstrators targeted the house of an individual identified as Shamsul Haque, alleging his involvement in drug trafficking activities.
Residents claimed that they had repeatedly informed the police about the alleged activities of Haque and others suspected of being involved in drug-related offences. However, they alleged that no effective action had been taken by the authorities, leading to growing frustration in the area.
The situation escalated when the protest turned violent, with the mob reportedly damaging the accused’s residence. Locals said the action was driven by concerns over the increasing impact of drug abuse on youth and the wider community.
The incident has underscored rising public concern over the drug menace in parts of Nagaon district and growing demands for stronger enforcement measures against traffickers.
Police have not yet issued an official statement on the allegations or the incident of vandalism. Further investigation is underway.
