Agartala, June 5: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on June 5 laid the foundation stone for a major heritage hotel project at Kunjaban in Agartala, marking a key milestone in Tripura’s tourism development efforts.
The project will see the historic Pushpabanta Palace, a prominent symbol of Tripura’s royal legacy, being transformed into a world-class heritage hospitality destination. The redevelopment will be undertaken as a luxury hotel under the management of the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the hospitality arm of the Tata Group.
Officials said the initiative is expected to strengthen the state’s tourism sector, preserve the architectural and historical significance of the palace, and generate new employment opportunities for local youth.
During his two-day visit to Tripura, Shah is also scheduled to inspect the India-Bangladesh border and chair a high-level security review meeting on issues related to border management, infiltration, human trafficking and smuggling.
Meanwhile, his planned visit to the 524-year-old Tripura Sundari Temple in Gomati district was cancelled due to inclement weather. Officials said Shah, who arrived in Agartala on the evening of June 4, could not travel to the temple after his helicopter was unable to take off because of adverse weather conditions. The visit to the revered shrine was subsequently called off.
