Nagaon, June 9: In a departure from his customary political engagements, Assam legislator Rupak Sarma impressed devotees and cultural enthusiasts with his performance in a traditional Assamese Bhaona at Puranigudam Koraligaon Bor Namghar in Nagaon district.
Representing the Nagaon-Batadrava constituency, Sarma took on the role of Indrajit in the Bhaona titled “Balibadh”, which was staged on Monday night as part of the concluding day of a three-day annual religious festival.
Performing in the traditional Brajavali language, the MLA brought the character to life with his acting skills, earning appreciation from the audience. His appearance marked a notable shift from the political arena as he immersed himself in Assam’s rich cultural and spiritual traditions.
The programme also featured popular Assamese actor Dipjyoti Keot, widely recognised for portraying Mohan in the television serial Beharbari Outpost. Keot appeared in another demon character during the Bhaona performance.
Making his debut as a Bhaona artiste, Sarma entered the stage with a graceful dance sequence and portrayed the role with enthusiasm, reflecting the teachings and ideals of Srimanta Sankardeva.
Speaking on the occasion, the MLA expressed happiness at getting the opportunity to perform in a Bhaona, describing it as one of the enduring creations of Srimanta Sankardeva. He said that being the MLA of Batadrava, the birthplace of the revered saint, made it a matter of pride and privilege to be associated with Assam’s Vaishnavite cultural heritage.
Among those in attendance was Devashish Sharma, who joined a large gathering of devotees and local residents at the cultural programme.
The event highlighted the enduring relevance of Assam’s traditional Bhaona culture and witnessed enthusiastic participation from people across the region.
