Neiphiu Rio Condemns Killing of Six Naga Civilians in Manipur, Calls for Justice and Restraint

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has strongly condemned the killing of six Naga civilians in Manipur, describing the incident as a “horrific and inhuman” act and urging immediate action to bring those responsible to justice.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Rio said the tragedy was particularly distressing as it came soon after Naga organisations had played a role in securing the safe release of 14 hostages, ensuring their safety and dignity during their period of captivity.

The bodies of six persons believed to be among the Naga men abducted from Kangpokpi district on May 13 were recovered by Manipur Police on Wednesday. The incident has triggered widespread concern and renewed tensions in the region.

Expressing grief over the deaths, Rio said the killings had deeply shaken the conscience of the Naga people and underscored the fragile security environment prevailing in Manipur. He praised the United Naga Council (UNC) and other Naga organisations for demonstrating restraint and opting for dialogue during a tense and volatile period.

According to the chief minister, the release of the 14 hostages reflected the Naga community’s commitment to peace and humanity. However, he noted that appeals for the reciprocal release of six Naga hostages allegedly held by members of the Kuki community did not produce a positive outcome, resulting in what he termed a tragic development.

Describing the killings as shocking and incomprehensible, Rio said the incident had caused profound anguish among the Naga people. He called upon both the Government of India and the Manipur government to ensure a prompt and credible investigation, stressing that those responsible must be identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“Accountability is essential. Only through a fair, transparent and credible process can a measure of confidence be restored among the people,” he said.

Rio also appealed to the authorities to take urgent measures to protect all communities and prevent further escalation of tensions. He warned that any erosion of public trust could worsen the already sensitive situation in the state.

Calling for calm and unity, the chief minister urged citizens, particularly Naga communities in Manipur, Nagaland, Myanmar and neighbouring regions, not to allow grief and anger to give way to further violence. Emphasising the importance of peace, justice and humanity, he extended his condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and the wider Naga community during the difficult period.
