Dead Leopard Found in Sonitpur River, Missing Body Parts Raise Poaching Suspicions

Sonitpur, June 11: The recovery of a dead leopard from the Gavaru River in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Thursday triggered concern among residents, with locals suspecting that the animal may have been killed and mutilated by poachers.

According to reports, the carcass was discovered in the waters of the Gavaru River near Gavaru Kochgaon. Residents who found the animal claimed that several body parts, including its tail and legs, were missing, giving rise to fears that the leopard had been deliberately hunted and parts of its body removed.

The incident caused widespread concern and drew the attention of authorities. Following information about the discovery, personnel from Bihaguri Police Station and officials of the Forest Department reached the spot and initiated necessary procedures.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the leopard’s death. Sources said arrangements were being made to send the carcass for examination and forensic analysis to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
