Continuing its campaign against narcotics, Manipur Police on Wednesday destroyed nearly 39.395 kilograms of seized drugs and psychotropic substances at the SHIJA Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility in Lamdeng, Imphal West.
The contraband was disposed of through an incineration process under the supervision of the police department as part of its Pre- and Post-Trial Drug Disposal Programme.
Addressing the event, Inspector General of Police Ningshen Worngam said the initiative represented an important step in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, which continue to pose a serious threat to communities and livelihoods across the state.
He said the disposal exercise demonstrated the commitment of Manipur Police to eradicating illegal drugs and advancing the goal of a drug-free Manipur.
According to officials, the destroyed substances comprised 4.444 kilograms of heroin powder, 5.353 kilograms of brown sugar, 0.422 kilograms of WY tablets, 2.668 kilograms of SP capsules and 26.508 kilograms of ganja.
Worngam noted that the seizures were the outcome of sustained vigilance and coordinated operations carried out by district police units, the Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) wing and other security agencies.
He added that the destruction process was conducted at a modern biomedical waste treatment facility to ensure transparency, environmental responsibility and public safety.
Highlighting the wider significance of the exercise, the IGP said the disposal of seized narcotics was not only a legal requirement but also a social responsibility aimed at safeguarding future generations from the harmful impact of drug abuse.
He also appealed to the public to continue supporting law enforcement agencies and to work collectively towards achieving a drug-free society in Manipur.
