Record-Breaking Kane Fires England Past Croatia in World Cup Opener

Sports Desk: England captain Harry Kane delivered a record-breaking performance as the Three Lions opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia National Football Team in Group L. Kane scored twice in the first half, helping England overcome a spirited Croatian challenge. His brace saw him equal England legend Gary Lineker’s national record of 10 World Cup goals. He also became the first English player to score multiple goals in three different FIFA World Cups—2018, 2022, and 2026.  England took the lead through a retaken penalty converted by Kane in the 12th minute. Croatia responded through Martin Baturina before Kane restored England’s advantage with a powerful header from a corner. However, Petar Musa equalised just before halftime, leaving the teams locked at 2-2.

The match swung decisively in England’s favour shortly after the break when Jude Bellingham scored a superb solo goal. Substitute Marcus Rashford then sealed the victory with a late strike following a swift counterattack. England manager Thomas Tuchel praised his side’s response after a nervy first half, revealing that a strong halftime message helped inspire the turnaround. Kane was later named Player of the Match for his influential display, which also included a crucial defensive intervention late in the game.

The victory gives England an early advantage in Group L and strengthens their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages. With Kane in record-equalling form and Bellingham continuing to shine, England have sent a strong message to their World Cup rivals.
