NIA Chargesheets 11 Accused in Alleged JMB-Linked Terror Conspiracy Targeting Northeast and West Bengal

Guwahati, June 26: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against 11 individuals in connection with an alleged terror conspiracy involving an offshoot of the banned Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), accusing them of attempting to expand the organisation’s extremist network across West Bengal and several northeastern states.

The chargesheet was submitted before the NIA Special Court in Guwahati on Friday under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

According to the investigating agency, the accused were allegedly linked to Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK), an offshoot said to have been established by senior JMB member Imam Mahmud Habibullah with the objective of furthering the activities of the banned outfit in India.

The NIA alleged that the conspiracy involved efforts to spread JMB’s extremist ideology across West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and other northeastern states by radicalising vulnerable youth, expanding the organisation’s network and disseminating anti-India propaganda.

As per the agency’s findings, the accused allegedly organised secret meetings, conducted religious indoctrination programmes, distributed extremist literature and used digital platforms to recruit supporters and encourage allegiance to the leadership of IMK and JMB.

The chargesheet identifies Nasimuddin as the alleged head of IMK’s activities in Assam, while Jagir Mia has been accused of leading the outfit’s operations in Tripura.

The NIA stated that its investigation led to the seizure of several incriminating documents, electronic devices and digital records, which it claims support the allegations of the conspiracy.

The agency said the case is part of its continued efforts to dismantle terror networks and prevent the spread of extremist organisations within the country. The allegations against the accused will now be examined during the judicial process.
