Shillong, June 26: On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to building a healthier, drug-free and more compassionate society.
Emphasising that the fight against addiction cannot be won by the government alone, the Chief Minister called for collective action involving families, communities, faith-based organisations, youth groups, civil society, frontline workers and citizens to work together in addressing the challenge.
Highlighting the state’s DREAM Mission, Sangma said the initiative is helping transform individual efforts into a unified movement by focusing on prevention, rehabilitation, recovery and restoring hope for those affected by addiction. He noted that even small efforts can create meaningful change by improving lives, strengthening families and contributing to a healthier society.
The Chief Minister also pointed out that addiction is not limited only to drugs and alcohol, but can take several forms. He urged people to adopt healthier lifestyles, extend support to those struggling with addiction and help reduce stigma through compassion and understanding.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, Sangma said Meghalaya remains dedicated to ensuring that no one battles addiction alone and that every individual is given the opportunity to heal, recover and rebuild their lives with dignity.
