Power Restored to Meghalaya Village After Nearly Four Years as New Transformer Ends Prolonged Outage

Shillong, June 29: Electricity has been restored to Bolmoram Adinggre village in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district after nearly four years, bringing relief to dozens of families who had been living without a dependable power supply.

Residents said the prolonged outage began after the village’s distribution transformer developed a fault and stopped functioning. Around 30 to 40 families in the Nongalbibra circle were left without electricity and had to rely on alternative sources of lighting after dark.

The village was covered under a power distribution arrangement operated by FEDCO on behalf of the state government. According to locals, repeated requests were made over the years to replace the damaged transformer, and the issue was repeatedly raised with the previous Distribution Franchise operator. However, despite multiple appeals, the faulty transformer was not replaced, leaving the village without electricity for an extended period and affecting everyday life and access to essential services.

The situation changed after SAI Computers Limited assumed responsibility for power operations in the Nongalbibra circle. Company representatives said local residents approached them regarding the issue, prompting an immediate site inspection to assess the condition of the electrical infrastructure.

“The matter was brought to our attention by residents and immediately after receiving the request, the company conducted a site survey to assess the condition of the electrical infrastructure. A replacement transformer was arranged, and the necessary clearance of the HT feeder line was carried out to prepare the network for restoration,” a company representative said.

Following the completion of the required technical work, a new transformer was installed and energised, with electricity supply to Bolmoram Adinggre officially restored on June 19.

The return of electricity has been welcomed by villagers, who said it has significantly improved living conditions, particularly for children and students.

“We had been trying without success to get our transformer repaired. Earlier it was difficult for us, our children and elderly family members. We are happy that SAI intervened in the matter and restored our line. We can finally return to normal life after suffering for almost four years without electricity,” a resident said.

Residents also expressed gratitude for the restoration work, saying the resumption of electricity has ended years of hardship and restored an essential service that had remained unavailable for an extended period.
