Aizawl, June 30: Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on Monday, June 29, presented the Governor’s Unit Citation to the 20th Battalion of the Assam Rifles in recognition of its distinguished service, operational excellence and contribution to maintaining security during its deployment in the state.
The citation was conferred during an investiture ceremony held at Lok Bhawan in Aizawl, where the Governor lauded the battalion for its exceptional role in securing the Indo-Myanmar border despite challenging security conditions and regional instability.
Singh commended the unit for its close coordination with law enforcement agencies and intelligence organisations, which contributed to curbing narcotics trafficking and other forms of cross-border illegal activity. Referring to the Assam Rifles as the “Sentinels of the North East” and the “Friends of the Hills”, he acknowledged the force’s significant contribution to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The Governor also highlighted the battalion’s community engagement initiatives, noting its efforts to foster stronger ties with local residents through civic action programmes. These included anti-drug awareness campaigns, medical camps and welfare activities for ex-servicemen, reflecting the force’s guiding values of Seva, Suraksha and Bandhutva (Service, Security and Fraternity).
Expressing confidence in the Assam Rifles’ continued commitment to duty, Singh urged future units to uphold the standards of dedication and professionalism demonstrated by the 20th Battalion and continue building on its legacy of service.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Inspector General of the 23 Sector Assam Rifles Brigadier Puspendar Sorayan, Pushpak Chief Engineer Krashnendra Singh, Commandant of the 20th Battalion Jaswinder Singh, along with senior officers and personnel of the force.
The 20th Battalion of the Assam Rifles was stationed at Lunglawn in Mizoram’s Lunglei district from November 12, 2023, to March 19, 2026. During its deployment, the battalion played a crucial role in guarding the Indo-Myanmar border, preventing smuggling activities and carrying out a range of community outreach programmes within its operational area.
