CID Custody of Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma Ends Today

Guwahati: The 14-day custody of Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, both arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg, concludes today. The duo is expected to be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), though questions remain over their potential transfer and accommodation if judicial custody is granted.

According to sources, Assam Police have expressed concerns regarding the safety of the accused, leading to deliberations on whether they should be sent to a jail within Assam or moved elsewhere. The issue of security has become a key point of discussion given the high-profile nature of the case and the intense public scrutiny surrounding it.

While the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is likely to request an extension of CID custody to continue interrogation, it is still uncertain whether the court will grant the plea. Officials have indicated that Mahanta and Sharma will not be presented before the court today; instead, their appearance is expected tomorrow morning, possibly alongside other accused individuals connected to the case.

Both Mahanta and Sharma were arrested under Sections 106(1), 105, 61(2), and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). As the investigation progresses, five Assamese-origin NRIs from Singapore have already recorded their statements before the CID, while six more are expected to testify in the coming days.

Among the six key individuals linked to organizing the Singapore yacht party, where Zubeen Garg was last seen alive, are Tanmoy Phukan and Abhimanyu Talukdar, both of whom have been under close scrutiny by investigators.

The developments mark a crucial phase in the SIT’s probe, with authorities tightening their focus on reconstructing the events surrounding the tragic death that has gripped Assam and the Assamese diaspora worldwide.
