Cachar, July 1: Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Customs Department, Silchar, seized a consignment of illegal foreign cigarettes valued at approximately ₹2.8 crore in Assam’s Cachar district on June 30, officials said.
The operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs regarding the interstate movement of contraband goods. Acting on the information, the joint team carried out searches at multiple locations before intercepting trucks transporting the illicit consignment.
Officials said the cigarettes were being routed through Kalain and were intended for distribution in Meghalaya and other states.
Following the seizure, the entire consignment was handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal proceedings.
According to officials, Assam Rifles and the Customs Department have been conducting sustained operations across the region to curb the circulation of counterfeit and smuggled goods and dismantle trafficking networks. They described the latest operation as a significant achievement in the ongoing crackdown on the illegal trade in contraband products.
