Sikkim BJP president D.R. Thapa met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday and submitted a series of demands concerning the state’s security, disaster management, constitutional issues and economic development.
According to a BJP statement issued on July 2, Thapa, accompanied by the party’s state general secretary Arjun Rai, sought stronger intelligence coordination, enhanced cyber surveillance and increased vigilance against extremist and anti-national activities in the strategically significant Himalayan state.
The request comes shortly after the arrest of a 19-year-old man in Sikkim in connection with allegations of spreading the ideology of the banned Islamic State (IS) terror outfit through social media.
During the meeting, the BJP delegation also urged the Union Home Minister to facilitate an early constitutional resolution of the long-pending Limboo–Tamang Assembly seat reservation issue. It further pressed for the inclusion of 12 tribal communities in the Scheduled Tribe list.
Referring to the damage caused by recent heavy rainfall, Thapa appealed for greater central assistance towards relief, rehabilitation, restoration work and the development of disaster-resilient infrastructure to improve the state’s preparedness for recurring natural calamities.
The delegation also requested the Centre to continue the Budgetary Support Scheme beyond 2027, stating that the discontinuation of tax-linked industrial incentives could prompt industries to relocate outside Sikkim, potentially affecting employment opportunities within the state.
According to the BJP, Thapa briefed Amit Shah on matters relating to border security, constitutional aspirations, disaster response, industrial growth and the expansion of the party’s organisational network in Sikkim.
The party stated that the Union Home Minister assured the delegation that all the issues presented during the meeting would be examined carefully and receive due consideration in the interest of Sikkim’s security, development and public welfare.
The delegation also informed Shah about the BJP’s growing organisational presence in the state and reiterated the party’s commitment to Sikkim’s development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
