In a major operation against drug trafficking, the Special Branch of Tripura Police, working jointly with the Government Railway Police (GRP), seized a large consignment of suspected banned cough syrup valued at more than Rs 2.5 crore from the parcel van of the Deoghar Express at Agartala Railway Station late on the night of July 2.
The operation was launched after officials received specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of the suspected contraband. During a detailed search of the parcel van, the joint team recovered 39,345 bottles of suspected Eskuf and Fairdyl cough syrup.
According to police, the bottles had been concealed inside 81 sealed metal drums, suggesting a calculated attempt to avoid detection during transportation.
The seizure was carried out jointly by the Government Railway Police, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and the Special Branch of Tripura Police.
Inspector General (Special Branch) Krishnendu Chakravertty said the latest operation forms part of the state’s continuing campaign against narcotics trafficking.
He noted that a similar consignment had earlier been intercepted at Jirania Railway Station in West Tripura district and said the smuggling of such substances through the railway network remains an ongoing concern. Chakravertty added that smaller consignments have also been seized in previous operations, with several individuals detained in connection with those cases.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to achieving a “Nasha Mukti Tripura”, he said law enforcement agencies are acting promptly on every credible input and intensifying efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating through the state.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify those responsible for transporting the suspected contraband. Authorities are also examining the source of the consignment and its intended destination.
