Silchar, July 4: Members of the Muslim community organised a peaceful demonstration in Assam’s Silchar town after Friday prayers to oppose the state government’s proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, urging the authorities to withdraw the proposed legislation.
The protest took place in the Berenga area and was organised by several religious and social organisations. Worshippers assembled outside a local mosque after the prayers, carrying petitions and expressing their opposition to the proposed law.
Participants argued that the proposed UCC Bill conflicts with Muslim Personal Law and infringes upon constitutional provisions relating to religious freedom and fundamental rights. They appealed to the government to reconsider its decision and withdraw the proposed legislation.
Speaking during the gathering, community representatives maintained that the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code would adversely affect the personal laws and religious practices of the Muslim community. They said their opposition to the proposal would continue through peaceful and democratic means.
The demonstration concluded without any untoward incident. Police maintained law and order throughout the protest, and normalcy prevailed in the area.
