Sribhumi Zilla Parishad seeks impartial probe into Hafiz Rashid’s conduct, Bikash Dhar death

SRIBHUMI, August 18: The Sribhumi Zilla Parishad has submitted a memorandum to the Assam Chief Minister seeking an impartial and comprehensive enquiry into the recent statements and conduct of Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury and any alleged links with land-mafia activities or persons connected with the death of social worker Bikash Dhar.

The memorandum said certain statements attributed to Choudhury, including his demand for the resignation of Minister Krishnendu Paul, had raised concerns among people and elected representatives. It urged the authorities to examine their context, factual basis and any implications for public order and social harmony.

The Zilla Parishad also sought verification of any alleged association between Choudhury and persons involved in land grabbing, illegal encroachment or organised land-mafia activities, as well as any possible connection with individuals suspected or accused in the case relating to Dhar’s death.

The memorandum highlighted Dhar’s association with Ekal Vidyalaya and his work among communities in tribal and forest areas. It said he had been involved in creating awareness about the rights and welfare of forest-dwelling communities, including issues concerning illegal occupation and encroachment of forest land.

The Zilla Parishad said these aspects should be examined as possible lines of enquiry, without drawing any conclusion before the investigation establishes the facts.

It urged the government to ensure that the investigation into Dhar’s death examines all relevant motives, associations and circumstances and that appropriate legal action is taken if any offence or unlawful conduct is established.

The memorandum stressed that the request was for a fair, evidence-based investigation and due process, without prejudging any individual.
