Assam Government to Prioritise Development Over Politics, Says Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, July 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 5 said the state government will devote the next two years primarily to development, indicating that political activities will take a secondary role until around 2028.

Speaking to reporters after chairing a Cabinet meeting, Sarma said the BJP-led government had received a decisive mandate from the people and would now focus on fulfilling its commitments rather than engaging in political contests.

“The election results have given us 102 seats. Our task now is to work for the people. For the first two years, development work will be our focus. From around 2028, perhaps, we can get back to politics,” the Chief Minister said.

His remarks come ahead of the Assam Assembly’s Budget Session, which is scheduled to commence on Monday. State Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah will present the state budget on July 10.

Sarma said the upcoming budget would outline the government’s economic roadmap for the next five years, based on the commitments made in the BJP’s election manifesto.

“The budget will reflect the five-year plan, based on our election manifesto. It will be our government’s economic vision for the next five years,” he said.

According to the Chief Minister, the budget will focus on key sectors such as agriculture, industry, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), self-help groups, employment generation and renewable energy.

Reacting to reports of opposition parties exploring a united front, Sarma downplayed the possibility of any immediate political challenge, asserting that the BJP had built a strong organisational base in Assam.

“BJP cannot be shaken in Assam for the next 25 years, such strong foundations have been laid,” he added.
