Manipur Governor Condemns Ukhrul Ambush, Mourns Death of Two Assam Rifles Personnel

Imphal, July 7: The Governor of Manipur has expressed profound grief over the death of two Assam Rifles personnel in an ambush in Ukhrul district, condemning the attack as a “dastardly act of violence” and extending condolences to the bereaved families.

In a statement shared by Lok Bhavan, Manipur on X, the Governor said he was deeply saddened by the loss of the two personnel, who were killed in the attack on Sunday.

Condemning the ambush, the Governor said such acts of violence have no place in society and cannot weaken the collective resolve to maintain peace and security. He conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the families of the deceased and prayed that they find strength and courage during their bereavement.

He also wished those injured in the incident a speedy recovery, praying for their resilience and early return to health.

The statement followed an ambush on a convoy of the 40 Assam Rifles near Nungshang Kong in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on July 6. According to sources, unidentified armed men allegedly attacked the convoy while it was passing through the area.

The two Assam Rifles personnel sustained critical injuries in the attack. Initial efforts were made to airlift or shift them to Imphal for advanced treatment. However, as their condition worsened, they were taken to the Assam Rifles camp at Sangshak in Ukhrul district, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

Security forces have launched a search operation to trace those responsible for the ambush. The identity of the attackers and the motive behind the assault have not yet been established.

Earlier, before the deaths were confirmed, Manipur Home Minister K. Govindas Singh had condemned the attack, stating that such incidents undermine the peace and harmony that the people of the state seek to preserve. He had also wished the injured personnel a speedy and complete recovery.
