Assam Police Holds Meeting with Journalists and Intellectuals on Zubeen Garg Death

Guwahati: The Assam Police convened a high-level meeting on October 14 with senior journalists, intellectuals, and prominent citizens to discuss the progress of the ongoing investigation into the death of legendary singer and actor Zubeen Garg. The meeting, held at 4 pm, was part of the police’s effort to maintain transparency and keep the public informed about the developments in the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe.

Renowned Assamese actor Pranjal Saikia, who attended the meeting, stated that more than 50 individuals have already provided statements to investigators. He added that the SIT is determined to file a comprehensive chargesheet within 90 days, assuring that “no guilty party will be allowed to go free.” Saikia also revealed that three Assamese expatriates from Singapore—Sushmita Goswami, Debojyoti Hazarika, and Pratim Bhuyan— are scheduled to appear before the SIT tomorrow to record their statements. However, Wajid Ahmed, another individual linked to the case, could not attend due to his Singaporean citizenship.

According to reports, while the investigators themselves cannot travel to Singapore, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has received a formal communication from Singaporean authorities requesting details of the CID officials who will coordinate with them abroad.

Senior journalist Atanu Bhuyan, another key participant in the meeting, mentioned that nearly 90% of the facts surrounding the case are already in the public domain, while about 10% new information was shared during today’s briefing. Bhuyan clarified that the post-mortem report of Zubeen Garg will not be disclosed to attendees as it will be submitted directly to the court. However, he confirmed that the SIT has unearthed alleged financial irregularities involving Shyamkanu Mahanta, for which the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is expected to launch a separate investigation.

Bhuyan further said that the SIT has gathered critical leads about Zubeen Garg’s final hours, including how he reached the yacht, where he was the night before his death, and the circumstances surrounding the incident. While these findings have not been made public, they are believed to be central to the case’s next phase.

He also shared that the assembled group recommended the appointment of a nodal officer to facilitate better coordination between the SIT and the media, in order to curb misinformation circulating online. “Many fake news reports have been spreading about the case. A nodal officer would ensure accurate and verified updates are shared with the media,” Bhuyan noted.

The meeting participants collectively emphasized that the post-mortem report was not shown or shared with anyone during the discussion and reaffirmed their trust in the SIT’s ongoing efforts. They highlighted that the investigation is proceeding strictly according to legal procedures, with the objective of ensuring a thorough, fair, and transparent probe.
