A young man’s mutilated body was recovered near the Kachari Line Hills at Rangamati under the Shalna area in Assam’s Nagaon district on Wednesday, triggering shock among local residents.
The deceased was identified as Bishal Chaotal. His body bore multiple injuries, leading police to suspect that he had been murdered.
Personnel from Shalna Police Station reached the spot after receiving information, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Police have launched a preliminary investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
A scooter bearing registration number AS02AQ 3070 was also recovered from the scene.
Local residents alleged that Bishal had been assaulted before being killed. They also claimed that he had been an accused in the murder of a mother and son from the same family about a year ago, giving rise to speculation that the killing may have been connected to that earlier case.
Police, however, have not confirmed any motive and said the investigation is continuing.
