Assam Targets 2 Lakh Government Jobs Over Next Five Years

The Assam government has set a target of providing two lakh government jobs over the next five years and announced the formation of a high-level task force, headed by the Chief Secretary, to identify new employment opportunities and accelerate recruitment across emerging sectors.

Presenting the 2026–27 State Budget in the Legislative Assembly on Friday, Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the government has already provided more than 1.64 lakh appointments during the past five years and created 1.15 lakh vacancies to strengthen the state’s employment generation drive.

He said the newly constituted task force will identify sectors with high employment potential, streamline recruitment planning and help achieve the government’s target of creating two lakh government jobs over the next five years.

Emphasising transparency and accountability, Baruah also announced that individuals with criminal records or pending criminal cases will not be eligible to receive benefits under government welfare schemes.

The Finance Minister said the measures form part of the government’s broader strategy to expand employment opportunities while ensuring that public welfare schemes are delivered to deserving beneficiaries through a transparent system.
