Akhil Gogoi Slams Assam Budget, Alleges Neglect of Flood Control and Rural Employment

Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi criticised the Assam Budget 2026-27, alleging that it failed to address the state’s recurring flood and erosion problems and lacked meaningful support for rural industries and employment generation.

Reacting after Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah presented the Budget in the Assembly, Gogoi described it as merely a “summary statement” and claimed it would increase the state’s financial burden rather than promote development.

“The government’s budget statement was given; it was a summary statement. Today’s total liability loan is Rs 1,96,000 crore. This means our liabilities are more than our budget,” Gogoi said.

He alleged that despite floods and erosion being Assam’s most pressing issues, the government had made no budgetary provision to tackle them.

“The biggest problem in Assam is floods and erosion. Not even a single rupee has been allocated in the budget to address this problem,” he claimed.

The Raijor Dal legislator also accused the government of overlooking the growth of small-scale industries and village-based enterprises.

“Small industries are to be built. Not even a single rupee is allocated for this. Not even a single rupee has been spent on making MSMEs in every village,” he said.

Gogoi further questioned the Budget’s ability to generate employment or strengthen the state’s economy, claiming it lacked a development-oriented vision.

“This Assam Budget is not a budget of development; this is a budget to make the people of Assam non-professional, to make people more lazy,” he said.

Presenting the Budget, Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the government would build on the progress achieved over the past decade to help realise the vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Assam.

“Over the last decade, Assam has moved from instability to peace, from neglect to national priority, and from uncertainty to decisive development,” Baruah said, adding that the government’s focus would be on building a productive, inclusive and knowledge-driven state through climate resilience, industrial growth, entrepreneurship, the digital economy and balanced regional development.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also said in a post on X that the government would continue expanding assistance for farmers through procurement schemes for paddy, maize and mustard, while extending dairy subsidies and financial support to pregnant women working in tea gardens.
