Zubeen Garg Death Case: Five Accused Remanded to Judicial Custody Again, Confirms Govt Counsel Pradip Konwar

Guwahati: Advocate Pradip Konwar, representing the Assam government in the ongoing Zubeen Garg death case, confirmed on October 15 that all five accused have been remanded to judicial custody once again after completing their initial 14-day term.

Speaking to reporters after the court proceedings, Konwar said, “After completion of 14 days of judicial custody, they were produced before the court, and the court passed an order to send them to judicial custody — meaning jail.”

He clarified that none of the accused have filed bail petitions and that the investigating agency did not seek further police custody, as the law does not allow an extension beyond 14 days. “There is no provision to extend custody beyond 14 days. That is the bar,” Konwar stated.

Addressing concerns raised about the safety of the accused inside jail, Konwar said the court has directed jail authorities to ensure full security. “The court has given directions for their safety. It is the duty of the jail authority to ensure that. They are under full security,” he assured.

Konwar further clarified that the accused are being treated in accordance with the standard jail manual, with no special privileges granted. “As per the jail manual, they are receiving all facilities,” he said.

Responding to reports about a separate case against Shyamkanu Mahanta under the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Konwar confirmed that the ED has not yet applied for his custody. “ED has not moved any application for custody so far,” he informed.

When asked whether the accused might be shifted outside the state for safety reasons, Konwar said that such a move would depend on the discretion of the investigating agencies. “If the CID or SIT feels security concerns, they may apply to the Honourable Court for transferring the accused to another prison. The court will then make a decision,” he said.

The case continues to draw intense public attention as the CID’s investigation progresses, with widespread demands across Assam for justice for Zubeen Garg.
