Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah on Monday, July 20, chaired a high-level meeting in Bongaigaon to review measures against tax evasion through the illegal transportation of goods and announced that the state would intensify enforcement from August 1.
The meeting was held at the office of the Bongaigaon District Commissioner and attended by the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts. Officials from the Forest, Taxation and Transport departments, along with transport operators and leading hardware traders, also took part.
Discussions focused on preventing the illegal transportation and sale of goods allegedly brought into Assam in private vehicles and buses without payment of applicable taxes.
Speaking after the meeting, Baruah said the state government would launch a coordinated enforcement drive from August 1 to curb tax evasion and the illegal movement of goods.
He said the Police, Taxation, Transport and Forest departments would jointly conduct inspections and enforcement operations across the region.
The Minister warned that anyone found transporting goods illegally to evade taxes would face immediate legal action.
Baruah also reviewed the role of transporters and traders in ensuring compliance with tax regulations and urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the authorities to prevent revenue losses to the state.
Following the meeting, the Minister also spoke about the prevailing flood situation in Assam, saying the government was continuing to monitor developments and undertake relief measures in affected areas.
