Assam-born singer Papon has appealed to people across India and around the world to support communities affected by the devastating floods in Assam, saying the scale of destruction this year has been unprecedented in recent times.
In a video message shared on X, Papon drew attention to the humanitarian crisis unfolding across the state and said entire villages remained submerged, leaving countless families without homes or livelihoods.
He said people had lost their lives, several others remained missing and a large number of animals had also died in the floods. Describing the situation as extremely serious, the singer urged people to spread awareness and come forward to support relief efforts.
Papon said the crisis was a matter of humanity and called for collective action to help those affected. He added that people working on the ground were already providing assistance but needed wider support.
According to the latest bulletin issued by the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System on Monday, Assam’s flood death toll had risen to 68.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said state ministers would visit different parts of Assam to oversee rehabilitation work, while relief operations remained the immediate priority in some of the worst-affected districts, including Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.
Sarma also said efforts to restore electricity were progressing in phases after power supply had been suspended in several flood-hit areas as a safety measure. Teams from the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited were conducting safety inspections while reconnecting power in districts including Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Dhubri and Bongaigaon.
The Chief Minister said the government remained committed to restoring essential services and helping affected communities return to normalcy as Assam gradually recovered from the floods.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday described the flood situation in Assam as “very serious” and said the Centre and the state government were jointly carrying out rescue and relief operations.
Sonowal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been closely monitoring the situation since the floods began and remained in regular contact with Chief Minister Sarma. He added that both the Centre and the state government were working together to distribute relief materials and conduct rescue operations.
The Union Minister also said the Prime Minister had spoken to him on Sunday morning to seek an update on the situation and assured the people of Assam of all possible assistance from the Centre.
According to Sonowal, a high-level inter-ministerial team had already reached Assam to assess the extent of the damage and interact with affected residents before further measures were taken.
