Whenever he visits Assam, he has never hesitated to insult the state and its people: Pijush Hazarika
Guwahati: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has come under fire for allegedly disrespecting Assam’s traditional Gamocha, a symbol of pride and cultural identity, during today’s visit to the state.
According to reports, Gandhi was greeted with multiple Gamocha upon his arrival — a customary gesture of respect in Assam. However, after wearing three Gamocha presented to him with enthusiasm, he appeared visibly uncomfortable. When a person stepped forward to drape a fourth Mising Gamocha around his neck, Gandhi abruptly pulled it away, later refusing to accept any more.

The incident quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism from across Assam.
Reacting to the controversy, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika accused Rahul Gandhi of repeatedly insulting the sentiments of the Assamese people. “Whenever he visits Assam, he has never hesitated to insult the state and its people,” Hazarika said. Gandhi had earlier disrespected the Assamese media during his previous visit. This was not the first time Gandhi had declined the traditional honor, calling the act yet another instance of the Congress leader “keeping the Congress tradition of disrespect alive.” the minister added.
