New Delhi: Former India batter VVS Laxman is reportedly in line for a major new role in Indian cricket, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considering him for the position of Director of Cricket. According to reports, the proposed appointment could be part of a wider reshuffle of key positions within the BCCI expected in September. There is, however, no official confirmation from the board regarding Laxman’s appointment or the exact structure of the proposed role.
Laxman currently heads the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where he has been closely involved in player development and high-performance programmes. His possible elevation to Director of Cricket would significantly expand his responsibilities and could see him play a broader role in overseeing Indian cricket operations. The development comes at a time when the BCCI is reviewing several important positions. Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee is scheduled to end in September, although reports have suggested that his tenure could be extended until June 2027.

Laxman’s extensive experience as a former international cricketer and his work at the Centre of Excellence make him a strong candidate for a wider administrative and cricketing role. He has also continued to contribute to the national setup in coaching capacities, including recently working with the Indian team in the T20I series against Zimbabwe. If appointed, Laxman could become an important link between India’s senior team, coaching staff, selectors and the country’s player-development system. The proposed role is expected to focus on long-term cricket planning and high-performance programmes. For now, the move remains a reported possibility, with the BCCI yet to make a formal announcement.
