Assam Flood Situation Improves, Over 51,000 People Still Affected Across Five Districts

Guwahati, Aug 17: The flood situation in Assam improved further on Sunday, August 16, with the number of affected people falling to around 51,000 across five districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

No fresh flood-related deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, keeping the death toll from this year’s floods at 104. Floodwaters continued to affect 14 revenue circles and 170 villages in Golaghat, Sivasagar, Nagaon, Dhemaji and Jorhat.

More than 51,800 people remained affected, down from around 62,000 a day earlier. Nagaon recorded the highest number of affected people at 32,132, followed by Jorhat with 7,426 and Sivasagar with 5,676.

The administration was operating 14 relief camps, providing shelter to 1,731 displaced people, while eight relief distribution centres remained functional in the affected areas.

The ASDMA bulletin said 3,628.17 hectares of cropland remained submerged and 18,474 animals had been affected. Several infrastructure facilities, including roads, also suffered damage in different parts of the state.
