Hima Langrin residents protest at KHADC, demand removal of Syiem

Thousands of residents of Hima Langrin staged a protest march to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Shillong on Tuesday, demanding the removal of incumbent Syiem Nangtei Syiemiong over alleged abuse of power.

Carrying banners and raising slogans including “KHADC listen to us”, “give us election” and “remove the Syiem”, the protesters reached the main gate of the KHADC. However, they were denied entry by the KHADC authorities and district administration as they had not obtained prior permission.

The protesters subsequently attempted to block the main road outside the KHADC towards Iewduh and Shillong, causing traffic congestion. Vehicles remained stranded for some time before one side of the road was cleared.

Addressing the gathering, the protesters demanded the immediate dissolution of the management board overseeing Hima land and the removal of Syiem Nangtei Syiemiong from the Hima Langrin Dorbar. They also demanded a referendum and fresh elections to choose a new Syiem.

The protesters said the decision to seek the removal of the Syiem was taken on August 7, 2026, and raised slogans calling for him to step down.
