AJYCP Warns of Meghalaya Economic Blockade Over Attacks on Assamese

Guwahati: The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has warned of an economic blockade against Meghalaya if attacks on Assamese travellers and vehicles in Shillong continue, escalating tensions between the two neighbouring states. The organisation also warned that it could take action against Meghalaya residents in Assam if the situation is not brought under control. The warning comes amid growing anger in Assam following violence during a black-flag motorcycle rally organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Shillong on August 19.

According to police, the violence resulted in damage to 31 vehicles, including Assam-registered vehicles, while two government vehicles were reportedly set on fire. Several people were also allegedly assaulted during the unrest. The developments have already affected interstate transportation. Guwahati-based cab operators have been blocking Meghalaya-registered vehicles at Jorabat and Khanapara, leaving passengers and goods vehicles stranded or forcing travellers to change vehicles at the border.

AJYCP’s warning has raised concerns that the ongoing dispute could develop into a wider confrontation, affecting trade, tourism and daily movement between Assam and Meghalaya. Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has spoken with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the violence. Both governments have agreed to work together to restore peace and normalcy, with designated ministers from the two states expected to take discussions forward.

Authorities on both sides are facing growing pressure to prevent retaliatory actions and ensure the safety of commuters. With the Guwahati-Shillong corridor being a vital transport and tourism link, any prolonged blockade could have significant economic and social consequences. The situation remains tense, and appeals for restraint have been issued as efforts continue to prevent further escalation.
