World’s First IVF Female Calf of Assam’s Indigenous Lakhimi Cattle Breed Born

Guwahati, August 22: The world’s first IVF female calf of Assam’s indigenous Lakhimi cattle breed has been born at Assam Veterinary and Fishery University, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.

Sarma described the development as a historic achievement for Assam, saying it marked a convergence of the state’s “Sabhyata, Sanskriti and Srijan”.

He said the breakthrough could open new avenues for the livestock and dairy sector, particularly in conserving indigenous cattle breeds, improving disease control and enhancing milk productivity. It could also contribute to increasing the income of farmers dependent on dairy activities.

Congratulating the veterinary scientists and professionals involved, Sarma said their work could usher in a new era for Assam’s dairy industry.

“She may be a tiny calf, but she carries a huge milestone for biotechnology in our State,” he said.

The birth through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) is expected to strengthen efforts to preserve and improve indigenous cattle breeds using advanced reproductive technologies.
