No Party or Individual Is Bigger Than Parliament Amid Vande Mataram Row: BJP

New Delhi : The political dispute over Vande Mataram intensified on Saturday, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the Congress of placing its internal resolutions above Parliament and the Constitution. Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, party spokesperson and MP Sambit Patra said no political party, family or individual could claim to be above the Constitution or laws enacted by Parliament. He questioned whether the Congress Working Committee (CWC) considered itself more important than Parliament. The BJP’s criticism came after the Congress Working Committee reaffirmed its 1937 decision to restrict the singing of Vande Mataram to its first two stanzas at party programmes. The BJP passed a resolution condemning the Congress position and said there could be no compromise over the honour and historical legacy of the National Song.

The resolution was adopted during the first meeting of the BJP’s newly appointed national office-bearers under party president Nitin Nabin in New Delhi. The BJP accused the Congress of allowing political considerations and alleged “appeasement” to influence its position on the national song. It also announced a nationwide campaign to educate people about the history, meaning and national significance of Vande Mataram.

The Congress, however, has defended its position, arguing that its decision follows its historical 1937 resolution and does not amount to disrespecting Vande Mataram. Congress leaders have accused the BJP of politicising the issue and diverting attention from matters concerning employment, inflation and development. The controversy has now expanded beyond the two parties, with the issue triggering political confrontations in some legislative forums as well. With both sides hardening their positions, Vande Mataram has emerged as a fresh flashpoint in the BJP-Congress political battle, adding another layer to the already intense national political discourse.
