Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman was expelled from the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Monday, August 31, after raising questions over the alleged suicide note of former state DGP Anurag Dhankar, triggering protests by Opposition legislators and a walkout by CPI(M) MLAs.
Roy Barman raised the issue after Question Hour, questioning why the alleged suicide note had not been made public and referring to claims by Dhankar’s wife that she had a photograph of the note.
Assembly Speaker Rampada Jamatia intervened, stating that the matter was under investigation and that the Chief Minister had already made two statements on the issue. He asked Roy Barman not to raise the matter further.
Congress and CPI(M) MLAs then entered the well of the House and staged a protest. After repeated appeals to return to their seats went unheeded, the Speaker ordered Roy Barman’s expulsion under the relevant rules and directed police personnel to remove him from the Assembly premises.
Roy Barman and the CPI(M) legislators later walked out and criticised the Speaker’s decision. The matter concerning the circumstances surrounding Dhankar’s death and the alleged suicide note remains under investigation.
