UDALGURI-SONITPUR, Aug 31: The Udalguri district unit of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) staged a two-hour sit-in protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office on August 31, raising concerns over alleged violence, syndicate activities and welfare issues in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
The protesters alleged that people in the BTR were living in fear under the government formed under the leadership of Hagrama Mohilary. They raised slogans against alleged syndicate activities, killings, violence against women and rising prices.
The protesters also demanded equal dignity and status for all communities and ethnic groups and urged the authorities not to exclude eligible beneficiaries from the Orunodoi scheme.
The UPPL further called for effective measures to protect children from drug abuse and demanded immediate action on the issues raised during the protest.
The party said the demonstration was intended to draw the government’s attention to the concerns and press for measures in the interest of the people.
