Several Naga villages along the Imphal–Tamenglong (IT) Road in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district reportedly came under attack on Tuesday morning, September 1, with houses allegedly set ablaze and sustained firing reported from around 4 am. No casualties were immediately reported.
Tapon Khunou, Tapon Kullen and Pipuram, a Liangmai Naga village around eight kilometres from Makui, were among the settlements reportedly targeted. The Makui Village Authority alleged that armed Kuki militants opened indiscriminate fire at Pipuram before setting houses and properties on fire, destroying belongings and food grains.
The authority further alleged that the attackers later targeted the main Makui Naga village and continued firing towards the settlement, with attempts allegedly made to set houses ablaze and cause casualties.
The village authority linked the latest incident to the August 27 killing of four Makui villagers in an alleged ambush between Makui Ashang and Thanamba villages, alleging a continuing pattern of attacks on Liangmai Naga settlements along the IT Road.
The allegations could not be independently verified. Further details on the extent of damage and the security situation were awaited.
