Sikkim is planning measures to strengthen its film sector, with improved access to professional equipment, technical training and a dedicated platform for local filmmakers among the key priorities.
The Sikkim Film Promotion Board discussed the proposals at a meeting on Thursday chaired by its chairman Tashi Tshering Bhutia. A major proposal was a three-day Sikkim Cine Conclave from November 26 to 28 to bring filmmakers and creative-sector professionals together.
The proposed conclave will focus on Sikkimese cinema under the theme ‘In Sikkim, By Sikkim’ and may feature short-film competitions, screenings and an awards programme. Winning films could also get an opportunity to be screened at the Sikkim International Film Festival.
Board member Prashant Rasaily highlighted the limited access local filmmakers have to professional equipment. He proposed making cameras, lenses and other technical resources more accessible, with equipment support and training potentially explored in collaboration with the Skill Development Department.
The proposal could enable filmmakers to access technical resources without relying entirely on direct government financial assistance. Rasaily also stressed the need for proper maintenance and technical support for any equipment provided.
The board also discussed a structured system to recognise contributions to Sikkim’s film and creative industries. Board member Dr Manoj Rai proposed clear criteria for recognising artists, filmmakers, entrepreneurs and others, including awards for acting, debut projects and other notable contributions.
Board member Rushma Rai suggested including contemporary Sikkimese films, classics and selected productions from outside the state in the proposed screening programme.
The meeting also explored expanding training beyond conventional filmmaking. A possible collaboration with Andhra Pradesh-based Tezaract was discussed for training in creative media and artificial intelligence-based tools, with a focus on digital content production and emerging career opportunities.
The proposals are yet to be finalised, and the board is expected to examine the plans further before deciding on their framework and implementation.
