New Delhi : India and Japan are set to create a new chapter in cricket history when their men’s teams meet in a one-off T20 International in Japan on September 22 as part of celebrations marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The historic Suzuki Cup T20I will be played at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture. It will be the first-ever men’s T20I meeting between India and Japan. The match will serve as the opening event of “Sport 75”, an initiative aimed at strengthening people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between India and Japan through sports. The initiative follows an agreement reached during a summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

The fixture also carries sporting significance as both India and Japan will compete in the men’s cricket tournament at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. India, the reigning T20 World Cup champions, will enter the Asian Games at the quarter-final stage, while Japan will compete in the group phase. For Japan, the contest provides an opportunity to showcase cricket and gain valuable experience against one of the world’s leading teams. India, meanwhile, will get useful match practice ahead of its Asian Games campaign.
The initiative also aligns with India’s ambition to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, with sports diplomacy expected to play an important role in strengthening bilateral ties. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Japan Cricket Association (JCA) said the match represents an important milestone in both cricketing and diplomatic relations between the two nations.
