Guwahati: A special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court in Assam has sentenced three persons to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with the seizure of 2.146 kg of methamphetamine tablets in Guwahati. The Special Judge, NDPS, Kamrup (Metro), convicted Shakeel Khan, Mohammad Yahya Khan and Mithilesh Kumar in the case registered by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Guwahati. The court pronounced the judgment on September 3, finding the three guilty under Sections 22(c), 28, 29, 35 and 54 of the NDPS Act.

Along with the prison sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on each convict. In case of default in payment of the fine, each will have to undergo an additional one year of imprisonment. According to the case details, the NCB Guwahati Zonal Unit acted on specific intelligence on October 14, 2020, and intercepted the accused near Rahman Hospital Private Limited on VIP Road at Six Mile in Khanapara. A total of 2.146 kg of methamphetamine tablets was recovered from their possession.
Khan and Yahya Khan are residents of Manipur, while Mithilesh Kumar is from Bihar, according to the case records. The NCB subsequently registered a case under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act and arrested the accused. Following completion of the investigation, a complaint was filed before the court on April 8, 2021. After completion of the trial, the court convicted all three accused and awarded the 15-year rigorous imprisonment sentence, bringing the long-running narcotics case to its conclusion.
